How Does a Car Battery Work?

A car battery is one of the most essential parts of a vehicle. It powers everything from the engine to the lights, ensuring your car runs smoothly. Understanding how a car battery works and how it is constructed can help you appreciate the complexity of your vehicle and why regular maintenance is necessary. Wrights Care Care knows understanding the basics can make you a more informed car owner when you visit our auto repair shop.

The Basics of a Car Battery

A car battery is a rechargeable battery that supplies electric energy to a car. Its main job is to start the engine, but it also provides power to electrical components when it is not running. The battery stores energy in chemical form and converts it to electrical energy when needed.

When you turn the key in the ignition, the battery sends a burst of power to the starter, which starts the engine. Once the engine runs, the alternator takes over, providing power to the car's electrical systems and recharging the battery.

Inside a Car Battery

A typical car battery comprises six cells, each producing 2.1 volts for 12.6 volts. Each cell contains a positive and a negative plate, separated by a piece of plastic. The positive plate is made of lead dioxide, while the negative plate is made of lead. These plates are submerged in sulfuric acid, which acts as an electrolyte.

When the battery discharges, the sulfuric acid reacts with the lead dioxide and lead plates to create lead sulfate and water, releasing electrical energy. The process is reversed when the battery is recharged, converting the lead sulfate back into lead dioxide, lead, and sulfuric acid.

Construction of a Car Battery

The construction of a car battery is quite robust and can withstand harsh conditions under the hood of a car. Here’s a breakdown of the main components:

  • Casing: The battery casing is a durable plastic that can withstand high temperatures and vibrations. It’s sealed to prevent the acid inside from leaking.
  • Plates: The positive and negative plates are arranged alternately and are connected to form the cells. These plates are usually made from lead or lead alloy.
  • Electrolyte: The sulfuric acid electrolyte, a mixture of sulfuric acid and water, allows the chemical reaction that generates electricity to take place.
  • Terminals: These are the connection points where the battery connects to the car’s electrical system. There are usually two terminals, positive and negative.

Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance of your car battery is crucial for its longevity and reliability. Regular check-ups at an auto repair shop can help ensure your battery is in good condition. Here are some tips for maintaining your car battery:

  • Keep it Clean: Dirt and corrosion on the battery terminals can cause a weak connection, which can lead to starting problems. Clean the terminals regularly with a brush, baking soda, and water solution.
  • Check the Electrolyte Level: Some batteries have removable caps that allow you to check the electrolyte level. If it’s low, you can top it off with distilled water. However, many modern batteries are sealed and maintenance-free.
  • Test the Battery: Most auto repair services offer testing to help you catch a weak battery before it fails. Regular testing is essential before winter, as cold weather can make batteries hard to test.
  • Secure the Battery: Ensure the battery is properly secured in its tray. Vibrations can damage a loose battery, reducing its lifespan.

When to Replace Your Battery

Even with the best care, car batteries don’t last forever. Most batteries last between three to five years. If you notice your car is slow to start or have to jump-start it frequently, it might be time to visit a mechanic for a new battery. An auto repair service can test your battery and let you know if it needs to be replaced.

The Difference Between Winter and Summer Tires

We often don’t give much thought to the tires under our cars until we’re sliding on ice or skidding through rain. What Our Happy Customers Are Saying

My experience with Wrights Car Care was probably the best car repair experience I could ask for. The last thing that you want to worry about while putting yourself through college is whether or not you can trust the people working on your car.  Wrights Car Care was very honest about exactly what the problems were with my vehicle and which issues needed to be addressed immediately and which ones could wait.  I have had no issues with any of the repairs I have had. They really have the customer's best interest in mind and it shows!

Susan Knippenberg

have been going to Wright's for numerous years and David has always been honest and helpful and concerned about each customer and their circumstances.  They always give detailed reports about what needs to be fixed and even a time frame if it can wait a while or needs immediate attention.  I really appreciate that personal attention.

This place is absolute gold. We moved to the neighborhood 3 years ago, and they have been our go-to car place for every issue, large or small, ever since. It's like bringing my car to a trusted and knowledgeable family member. They have done everything from major repairs to minor tune-ups for us, and we have never been dissatisfied. Twice I have brought my car not sure what was going on, and it turned out to be a small enough issue that they fixed it on the spot for no charge! Honest, competent, quick, fair, and kind. You can't do better.
